Nagarhole – ‘A Saucerful of Secrets’

It was my first safari into the beautiful forest of Nagarhole, and Mr. Venkatesh Kolappa, one of the best naturalists of Kabini, navigated our driver into the forest. Just as our vehicle crossed the check post, we were pulled back to a stop, and a female elephant gracefully emerged from the lantana thickets. Even as this majestic creature continued walking, jungle mynas perched fearlessly on it, to feed on any tiny insects present on the elephant’s back.

It’s monsoon time, and the jungle reflects this totally. The bushes are thick and fully grown .  I was the guide on the morning drive in the National Park that day. We were lucky to sight  a  small  herd of Elephants, Sambar and a sounder of Wild Pigs. Read more

One of my recent safaris by boat was really special, as I got a chance to sight a huge Mugger or the Marsh crocodile basking on the river bank very close to me. On this drive, we had sighted about five in total, but this one was least bothered by our presence. Read more
